About Freda

Freda was born in 1919 in Halifax the day after her father died. Her mother returned to Howgill to teach at the school when Freda was only six weeks old.

Her mother was very musical and may have instilled a love of music but she died when Freda was eight and so she was then brought up by relatives. It was a hard start to life and money was never plentiful.

She attended Howgill school and then moved onto the British School in Sedbergh. When the 2nd World War came along any hopes of going to music college were dashed…

A Musical Life

Freda held onto her love of music and later taught many local children to play keyboard instruments, she also played the organ at Howgill church.

It was her husband, Stan, who suggested that a fund to help children play music was set up, sadly he died quite young but Freda held onto that dream for the rest of her life and lived quite frugally to enable it to happen.

A Creative Spirit

Another of Freda’s talents was writing. She wrote articles for the Westmorland Gazette and The Dalesman amongst many other publications.

Together with her husband Stan they wrote ‘Return to the Lune Valley’, ‘Do You Remember’ follows on from an earlier book; ‘These We Have Known’.
